Devices like the iPad and platforms like Android are the future of the web and the future is happening now. Learn to build attractive and interactive websites that are compatible with modern web browsers and platforms by using foundational web technologies of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

This 2-day workshop will teach participants how to build a website based using the same techniques and principles of websites such as Google.com, Discovery.com, and CNN.com. Over the course of the workshop, participants will take a mockup design and convert it into a fully functioning website, complete with animation effects and search engine friendly code.
There’s a wealth of knowledge available to teach you how to build websites. However, web development techniques are constantly evolving to keep up with the web. So, how do you know what techniques are relevant and what techniques are out of date?
The workshop will teach you the practices and principles in use today by web professionals. Learn to build websites based on web standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium and observed by all major web companies like Google, Microsoft, Mozilla and Apple. This standards-based approach will ensure that your website is compatible not only with today’s browsers and devices like the Nokia N900 and the iPad but remain relevant as the web continues to evolve.
Many colleges teach web design that rely heavily on tools developed in an era when the web was constrained to computer monitors. The web has dramatically evolved and the old tools and techniques are not able to properly optimise website for next generation browsers and web devices.

In this session we’ll learn what makes a good or bad website and planning for a successful website. We’ll also learn about the 3 layers of the web and how to apply modern web design principles such as progressive enhancement and graceful degradation into our website.
Discover the tools in the web designer’s toolbox. Familiarise yourself how to develop a website on your computer before publishing it to the web.
Imagine if you had X-ray vision that allowed you see underneath the world’s most popular websites. In this session, you’ll do exactly that and discover how popular websites are created. Next we’ll take a design and chop it up to be used in our website.
Get introduced to HTML code, and start building an example website. We’ll learn how to make your code friendly to search engines and accessible to non-computer devices like mobile phones.
Now, you have a chopped up design and the raw HTML – it’s time to marry both with Cascading Style Sheets. By the end of the session, our HTML code will have transformed into the design we started off with.
Forms are how visitors interact with your website, so let’s add one to our example website. Learn how to make user friendly forms to make your website more functional and interactive.
Get an introduction to the power of JavaScript. Use it to add effects and animations to the website – all without Flash! We’ll be using jQuery, one of the most popular JavaScript libraries on the web to simplify development.
Web browsers are not made equal, and we’ll see how different browsers render our website differently. We’ll then learn how to solve these issues so that your website works across multiple browser, and gracefully degrades on older, less capable ones.
HTML5 is the next generation HTML specification being drafted by the World Wide Web Consortium. In this session we’ll find out what it means to web designers today and how to prepare for the future of the web.
The web is going mobile in a big way with internet-enabled mobile phones and paradigm changing devices like the Apple iPad. In this session, you will be introduced to adapting and optimising your website code for mobile devices.
Now you’ve got a website that looks and works great. The next step is to publish it to the web. Learn the fundamentals of web hosting and how to share your website with the world.
